Enterocele

When someone has already had a hysterectomy, prolapse can develop at the vaginal vault. The vaginal vault (vaginal cuff) refers to the upper apical portion of the vagina at the site where the cervix was removed at the time of hysterectomy. The vaginal vault can descend creating an enterocele. An enterocele is a vaginal hernia that can occur between the pubocervical fascia and the rectovaginal septum.

The result is a buldge that allows the intestine to protrude to the lower portions of the vagina. Symptoms that can result are: vaginal pain, difficulty evacuating the bladder and rectum, discomfort with physical activity, pain with intercourse, pelvic pressure, and atrophy of the vagina skin.
