Minimally invasive surgery is the technique of accomplishing surgical procedures through small keyhole incisions. Without a large abdominal incision, patients recover with less pain and a shorter hospital stay. They also return to work and exercise more quickly, with the potential for fewer complications.
Dr. Lynn D. Kowalski,
M.D., FACOG, FACS
da Vinci surgery is the latest advance in minimally invasive surgery. Made by Intuitive Surgical, the da Vinci system brings conventional laparoscopy into the 21st century. With the ability to perform complex operations through keyhole incisions, previously unachievable results and short hospital stays are now available for many more patients.
On average, 4 to 5 small incisions are made on the abdominal skin. Small circular cannulas (trocars) are inserted in these incisions, and instruments the size of a dime are then passed through these cannulas. A special 3-D camera is inserted through one of the trocars, allowing an incredibly detailed, three-dimensional, magnified view of the internal organs. The instruments are controlled by the surgeon through a sophisticated computer with the precision of a human hand.

Dr. Kowalski has been performing computer-assisted surgery since October, 2005. She has developed one of the busiest robotic surgery programs in the United States, offering da Vinci Hysterectomy for uterine fibroids, endometriosis, pelvic masses, and precancerous conditions.
She also performs da Vinci Hysterectomy and Staging for uterine cancer, and da Vinci Radical Hysterectomy for cervical cancer. Her results have been accepted for presentation at the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists. She is also involved in the training of surgeons across the United States who are just learning this new technology.
As you can see on the right image below, da Vinci surgery is minimally invasive, with the ability to operate through small, keyhole incisions. da Vinci Surgical Incision also has better visualization than open surgery.

Please visit the daVincisurgery.com website to view the Patient Educational Seminar that she prepared to provide a detailed look at da Vinci surgery for gynecologic problems. Not everyone is a candidate for da Vinci surgery, but if you need gynecologic surgery, give us a call to set up a consultation.
